Clemson University students have proposed that the school's administration create an amnesty program for alcohol violations when a student's health is in jeopardy. "This would just mean one less barrier to getting someone help," said Tom Richey, president of the graduate student body. The student government proposal, a Medical Alcohol Amnesty Policy, would allow students to get medical help for those who have had too much to drink without worrying about facing disciplinary action. The group says the policy would encourage students to seek help if they know they are not going to get in trouble for violating rules on alcohol use. The University of Georgia adopted an amnesty policy in May, but no students have used it, said Kim Ellis, associate dean of students. The proposal comes after three Clemson fraternity members were charged with alcohol-related misdemeanors in the death of a freshman from alcohol poisoning at an off-campus party.
