High-powered push to widen ban on alcohol

A trial ban on almost all takeaway alcohol in Fitzroy Crossing appears increasingly likely to be extended beyond six months and imposed on other Kimberley towns after winning the backing of Alan Carpenter and Police Commissioner Karl O'Callaghan yesterday.

Both the Premier and Mr O'Callaghan named Halls Creek as the next town where director of liquor licensing Barry Sargeant should consider imposing a ban on all takeaway alcohol except lowstrength beer.

But despite revealing his backing for an extension of the alcohol restrictions in Fitzroy Crossing “well beyond" the sixmonth trial, Mr Carpenter said he continued to have concerns about extending the ban to bigger regional centres such as Broome and Derby.

“I am very heartened by the analysis that is being done of the impact of the alcohol restrictions in Fitzroy Crossing," Mr Carpenter said.
