Charity golf tournament needs players

The first Peterborough Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) charity tournament is scheduled for 2 p. m. and teams are required. Tickets are $125 per golfer and they receive a golf cart, dinner and prizes with proceeds going to FASD.

According to FASD committee member Tammie Hyde four four-player teams have already registered.

"We would like to have more, she said. "We need more golfers."

FASD is an umbrella term used to describe the range of effects that can occur in an individual who experienced prenatal exposure to alcohol. They are lifelong effects and may include physical, mental, behavioural and/or learning disabilities. Alcohol interferes with normal brain development, resulting in neurological impairments.

According to a report, FASD is a major root cause of many expensive social programs and people living with it are at high risk of learning disabilities, early school dropout, juvenile delinquency, drug addiction, alcoholism, mental illness, crimes against poverty, vandalism, child and spousal abuse, employment and poverty.
