Brownsville man incompetent for trial in OWI case

JUNEAU A Dodge County Circuit Court judge has declared a 22-year-old Brownsville man incompetent to stand trial in a drunken driving crash that injured four people last fall in the town of Lomira.

During a competency hearing Thursday morning, Judge Daniel Klossner ordered Matthew Britton to be committed for treatment. In the meantime, legal proceedings against Britton are to be suspended and brought back for review at a later date.

Britton is charged with injury by intoxicated use of a vehicle. If convicted as charged, Britton faces a maximum of 12 years in prison and $25,000 in fines.

According to the criminal complaint, Britton was traveling south on Center Drive in the town of Lomira at about 10:34 p.m. on Aug. 31 when he failed to stop at a stop sign.
