It's a shame that politics doesn't allow someone who is normally courageous like Barack Obama to be true to himself on an issue like the decriminalization of marijuana.
To defend his position, Obama need only ask, "If citizens are allowed to legally sell, purchase, consume and share alcohol and tobacco—addictive drugs with pernicious consequences when abused—shouldn't the same rights be extended to users of marijuana, a drug that arguably has fewer detrimental side effects?"
The disparity in the way society views different drugs and punishes their use is not surprising, given the millions of dollars the alcohol and tobacco lobbies invest in keeping their products legal—and profitable.
