High school district hopes new breath analyzers will keep proms

The district has purchased AlcoBlow wand breath analyzers, which, when blown into, will detect alcohol levels as zero, low or high blood-alcohol content. The machine will give a reading in five seconds or less, according to the company's Web site, www.alcoholtest.com/alcoblow.htm.

The district hopes this gadget will deter students from drinking alcohol at preprom parties, district spokeswoman Ilse Whisner said.

"We're doing this not as a punitive measure, but for the students' safety," she said. "We want to promote a consciousness that students can have fun without drinking."

With the junior prom schedule over � without incident, Whisner said � Freehold High School has kicked off its senior prom season.

Every promgoer, even out-of-district students, received a letter explaining that there would be testing before the prom, Jewell said.
